A new film from the Jackass boys is to make its debut online, MTV Films have confirmed.
Jackass 2.5, an hour-long feature mixing new content with extra footage shot for last year’s Jackass 2, is to make its online debut on December 19th, according to Variety.
The film is to be streamed for free without advertising for one week, before download sites such as iTunes and Amazon offer the movie for download.
Blockbuster is to host the content on Jackassworld.com and the rental firm have confirmed that the movie’s marketing campaign will be almost exclusively web-based and will include an application on social networking site Facebook.
David Gale, MTV Films executive vice president of new media and speciality film content, explained the launch was the start of a longstanding arrangement between the studio and Paramount Digital Entertainment to release digital content.
“This is the first major project that we’re launching under that initiative,†he said. “It’s in the vein of Kill Bill 1 and 2. After shooting Jackass 2, we had more than one movie. So we shot some new stuff [in September] and added some of that new content.â€
Thomas Lesinski, president of Paramount Digital Media, told the trade newspaper the third Jackass movie had always been planned as a web-based project.
“We’ve developed a distribution model that’s never been done before,†he explained. “Our goal is to prove that there is an audience to watch content online.â€
The DVD for Jackass 2.5 will be available to buy on December 26th while Jackassworld.com promises on its home page to be “fully erect†by February 8th with clips and new content from the successful MTV show.
